Visual Data Analysis for Discovery and Understanding - $350 SOLD OUT
with Stephen Few, Perceptual Edge

Ninety percent of all business data analysis can be done using simple graphing techniques to discern meaningful patterns in data. The remaining 10%, which requires sophisticated statistical and financial analysis skills, are well addressed by available resources, but where are the resources that teach the skills needed by the rest of us? Even though these skills are easy to learn and apply with proper guidance, very few people involved in analyzing business data know them. This workshop provides a solution

This course is intended for all those whose work requires them to make sense of quantitative business data. This audience is much broader than financial analysts, or even analysts by any name. This course provides practical skills that are useful to managers at all levels and to anyone interested in keeping a keen eye on the business. Anyone who uses Excel or any of the many other business productivity tools used for data access, analysis, and reporting, will learn how to use them productively, perhaps for the first time.

You will learn to:

Looking Inside the TWB File
with Andy Cotgreave, University of Oxford

What happens when the Tableau app doesn't let you do what you want it to? Do you have workbooks that are so big you've lost track of which sheets are on which dashboard, which fields are used, or even what connections there are? Are you curious as to how Tableau builds a file?

Andy Cotgreave, from the University of Oxford, answered yes to these questions, and discovered that opening the TWB file in a text editor is one answer: inside the TWB file is a world of XML wonders to be explored. This session will examine how the XML that is used to make a TWB file can be analysed and edited to automate several tasks not yet possible in Tableau Desktop. He will also demo an application that uses the XML to audit your workbooks, creating data dictionaries, connection lists, and worksheet-by-worksheet analysis.

Narrative Visualization: Telling Stories with Data
with Jeff Heer

Data visualization is regularly promoted for its ability to reveal stories within data, yet these "data stories" differ in important ways from more traditional forms of storytelling. Storytellers, especially online journalists, have increasingly been integrating visualizations into their narratives, in some cases allowing the visualization to function in place of a written story.

In this talk, we will explore the design space of this emerging class of visualizations. Drawing on case studies ranging from news media to visualization research, we will discuss visual and interactive devices that support storytelling with data, and identify common narrative patterns. In particular, we will highlight a central concern in the design of narrative visualizations: the balance between author-driven elements—providing narrative structure and messaging—and reader-driven elements—enabling interactive exploration and social sharing. The strategies discussed will suggest ways to present statistics in concert with narrative, potentially enhancing viewers' engagement with data.

Tableau Server - The Ultimate Profit Driver
with Todd Currie, Tableau Software and Mel Stephenson, TDR

Listen to a beautiful, true story about how using BI to give people clear feedback can translate into a more together company, better supplier and customer relations, and significant profit improvements. By the way, this is also a success story. Total Disc Repair has doubled their profits every year for the last 5 years.

In 2005 Total Disc Repair was a 4 year old company that had grown quickly to $2m in revenues but was generating only $50k in profit. They had a myriad of fundamentals that weren't visible and so weren't being controlled - they struggled to see the data. Initially they created a self-refreshing, live Excel dashboard for the 2 company directors, and had their first year where the directors knew exactly what was going on day-to-day in the key areas. But it was still just the directors and it was only in the key areas.

Attend and learn how:

+ Every level of an organization benefits from BI - using it as a tool just for the management wastes most of its potential
+ People thrive on clear, unambiguous feedback on their performance - good BI provides that
+ Good answers breed even better questions - keep working at it and it just gets better
+ To ask the question that delivers a great dashboard

Winning with Visual Analytics on Large Data Volumes
with Roger Mann, Teradata

Organizations are experiencing an unprecedented explosion in data. Regulatory compliance makes discarding any corporate data difficult. Data devices, such as RFID tags, communication switches, and smart readers, are generating enormous volumes of data. Mixed among the mounds of repetitive and unremarkable data are those golden nuggets of information that could be a game changer for your business. How do you find those needles in the haystack? What technology is available today to support petabyte-sized databases that will allow business users unfettered access to mine and analyze that data at a reasonable cost?

It is equally critical to develop effective business practices and adopt new tools that embrace visual thinking and communication. Given today's ever-expanding volume of data and focus on corporate performance, data visualization becomes even more important. It enables customers to answer many questions such as: How effective are the analyses or business summaries that your group produces? How well do reports reflect the key relationships, bottlenecks, and value-drivers? How long does it take to get to the root cause analysis of important problems?

Wells Fargo successfully uses visualization on a 50TB Teradata EDW to successfully navigate the current changing economic conditions by understanding customer patterns and introducing the right products in the market.

Teradata-Tableau customers have adopted the joint solutions in their Revenue Management and Operations Research department to better utilize data from the Teradata EDW and have a clear visibility to their business situations and act effectively to minimize risks from challenges and capitalize on opportunities.

Attend and learn:

+ Understand the concepts and importance of data storage and retrieval
+ Learn about the new development on super fast and super efficient storage
+ Enabling visual analysis and not just visualization
+ Solving critical business problems using visual analytics
+ Live examples from Finance / Retail / Telecommunications / Airlines and other industries

Business and Management Lessons from Superfreakonomics
Stephen Dubner, Co-author of Freakonomics and Superfreakonomics

In this engaging presentation, Stephen Dubner uses research from Superfreakonomics to address the following questions:

+ How can you change the world using data – rather than emotion, opinion, or anecdote?
+ Why do firms need to run more experiments?
+ Why do businesses worry too much about "noisy" risks and not enough about "quiet" ones?
+ What are inexpensive and simple solutions to "unsolvable" problems?
+ Why is behavior change so difficult?
+ Why is "consensus building" often a waste of time and resources?
+ What are things you thought you knew but didn't – and things you never thought you wanted to know, but do?

The Superfreakonomics presentation is even bolder, funnier, and more surprising than Freakonomics. From the rarefied corridors of academia to the grimiest street corners, Stephen Dubner will bring you stories inspired by engineers and astrophysicists, psychotic killers and emergency-room doctors, amateur historians and transgender neuroscientists. New and inspiring lessons abound from the 4 years of research that went into writing Superfreakonomics and Stephen Dubner will share the best of their findings with you.

The DisInformation Age: Technology Is Making Us Stupid
with Stephen Few

The Information Age has largely failed us. It has buried us in data that we have scarce means to understand or use. In many respects, the Information Age has made us stupid by giving us the illusion of being informed when we in fact understand less than before and by propagating the myth that computers can do our thinking for us, resulting in a whole generation that has turned off its brain. Rather than using technology to elevate ourselves, we have allowed it to lower us to the level of machines, reduced to programmed responses rather than reflective thinking. An Information Age worthy of the name will not be ushered in by technology, but by people. Technology can assist us, but it cannot take the lead. It is up to us to take a stand.

To make this happen, we must focus on design—the art and science of making things work really, really well to do things that really, really matter. In particular, a design mindset is needed by software companies to create effective data sensemaking tools and it's needed by each of us to clearly communicate the stories that we find in our data to those who need to be informed.

The time to take a stand is now. The opportunity won't last forever.
